This is not a story about the Los Angeles basketball team landing in Africa, but rather it’s a story of young Ndoto girls and boys who go to a school called Lake Primary here in Kisumu. They acquired the name Lakers as a result of the love they have for each other and their resolve to remain united as a team.
It’s a team composed of nine members: Purity (sponsored by Linda S.) and Georgina (sponsored by Richard & Chris T.), both of whom are in the 8th grade. Mustapha (sponsored by Heather R.), who is in the 7th grade. Caroline (sponsored by Fred & Sandy T.), Faith (sponsored by Gary & Laura P.), Debra (sponsored by Rosemary F.) and Jannes (sponsored by Brandon & Julie C.), all of whom are in the 6th grade. Moffat (sponsored by Rachel M.), who is in the 4th grade, and Bravin (sponsored by Adam & Jessica R.), who is in grade 2.
This team requires constant coaching, and as such the Ndoto staff has taken it upon themselves to serve them. We make random visits to that school to check on them and also encourage them to work extra hard on their academic performance. But mostly we stress discipleship to be followers of Jesus. At a tender age, we help them understand that even the best teams fail terribly without Jesus.
On one of the recent visits we made to the school, we taught them about the love that Jesus has for kids according to the book of Luke 18:15-17. “People were also bringing babies to Jesus for him to place his hands on them. When the disciples saw this, they rebuked them. But Jesus called the children to him and said, “Let the little children come to me, and do not hinder them, for the kingdom of God belongs to such as these. Truly I tell you, anyone who will not receive the kingdom of God like a little child will never enter it.”
The frequent visits that we make to the school help in cementing the unity and love they have for each other. Ndoto encourages students who are going to the same institution to meet. This way they become used to each other and become champions for the course of Jesus, which is salvation for all mankind. They can also help others know more about Ndoto and perhaps apply themselves!
GO, GO LAKERS!!
