Obunga for Jesus

The wave is robust, the intention is clear, and the direction has been set: it’s hell empty and heaven full for the Obunga slum. Each day is an opportunity to bring more people into the knowledge of the abundance of grace in Christ Jesus.

The Evangelism Group in Bible study

A group of young boys and girls from the Ndoto Community Church have set out on an evangelism mission. As the sun rises each dawn it’s an opportunity for the group to experience the mercies of the Lord, that are new every morning, and replicate them to the members of the community.

Some years ago, Obunga was the hub of all sorts of immorality. Young men and women turned to theft and alcoholism. It was very common to bump into raging fires, lit in corners of mud thatched houses as people were busy brewing traditional liquor. Drunkards wallowed in trenches filled with mud as they bubbled lots of meaningless words. Those moments were truly heart breaking. Obunga lost direction then.

God in his loving mercy is raising up young men who are eager to break from the past, and only do so by spreading the Gospel. They use the Gospel as a tool to bring salvation to mankind.

Every week is an opportunity for the group to swing into action. They start with an evening bible study session every Monday to Thursday where they discuss topics that affect the lives of youth. In this group they build themselves up just before getting out to build up the lives of others.

Saturday is usually the evangelism day. The group, under the leadership of Benson O. (sponsored by Ben T. and Ryan & Colleen H.) and Joseph W. (sponsored by Grant & Carolyn S.), both of whom are college students, converge at the church premises at 3 p.m. They begin the mission with a short moment of prayer just before getting out and knocking every single door in the neighborhood to spread the Gospel of salvation by grace. The theme bible verse for the group has always been Revelation 3:20: “Here I am! I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears my voice and opens the door, I will come in and eat with that person, and they with me.” The verse is a clear reminder of how God is consistently searching for men’s hearts, and how he desires to have a long-lasting relationship with mankind.

God is using the Ndoto Evangelism Team in a tremendous manner. The group has experienced people being healed right in front of their own eyes; they have led multiple people to receive Jesus and invited many more to come and worship at the Ndoto Community Church. The members of this group have resolved that they will not allow Obunga to be judged by its rugged past, but instead they will seek the help of God in building a better present. TO GOD BE THE GLORY!
