It’s now one month since the schools opened, and the absence of our Sunday school kids who have already gone back to their various boarding schools can already be felt. The holiday went quickly, but the beautiful moments we shared during the term break are still as fresh in our minds as the first gleam of dawn each day.
We culminated last year by planting the art of service into the hearts of the Ndoto Sunday school kids. A new year was on the horizon and the kids had to make it right with themselves and their community before stepping foot into 2018.

On the Sunday morning of Christmas Eve, the kids came to the Sunday school service filled with energy. We had a short moment of sharing the word of God. Our first word came from the book of 1st Corinthians 9:19: “Though I am free and belong to no man, I make myself a slave to everyone, to win as many as possible.” Then we connected that to James 2:17: “In the same way, faith by itself, if it is not accompanied by action, is dead.”
Though Paul is known for preaching “grace through faith alone” and James is known for the importance of works, the two are in perfect agreement. The message for all of us is that Christ has set us free so that we will become servants to our fellow man, doing good works, “so that they will glorify your Father who is in heaven” (Matthew 5:16). Those deeds can show you if your faith is alive!

The words of the book of James re-energized us, and we rose up and in unison shared the Lord’s Prayer before stepping out into the community to give an early Christmas to the less fortunate. In every house we set foot, we were welcomed by brilliant smiles of joy. The smiles in the faces of the people we visited spoke volumes. I suppose that if a psychologist had analyzed those smiles, the words clearly inscribed would have been “I wish everyday were Christmas Day.”
At the end of all that we gathered for a photo shoot and then thanked God for the beautiful day he had given to us. Deep in our hearts there was a sense of fulfillment: we had shared the love of Christ with others.
To all the Ndoto Sunday school kids in boarding schools: “We truly love you and pray for you continually.” Missing you, kids!!!
