This month, Ndoto Community Church hosted a seven-day evangelism campaign for the community of Obunga, and the community responded: the church leaders took down the names and phone numbers of 191 people who said they had surrendered to the grace of God and were ready to be trained to follow Jesus.
Pastor Michael Omondi and the church have been planning this crusade since December, but in a sense, this week began back in 2009, when a young boy was accepted for sponsorship as part of Ndoto’s first class of students. David, in kindergarten at the time, came to be known almost exclusively by his nickname, Pastor. Though his career dreams have wandered from police officer to lawyer to doctor, his nickname always stuck. His path through life was challenging, losing his parents and staying in different homes. In 2016, David came to live with Pastor Michael and they spent hours together growing in discipleship.

David is now in his second year of studies at Moi University, working on a degree in linguistics, media, and communication, and he has joined a ministry called NET MOI, which gathers for worship and teaching regularly at school and goes on mission all over Kenya. David persuaded the group to make Obunga their next mission site, and between NET MOI students and Ndoto Community Church youth, 89 young men and women went out into the fields of the community for the harvest. God confirmed his word in Luke 10:2 that “the harvest is plentiful but the workers are few.” When the workers went out, the harvest was there.

Door to door evangelism |
The mission was seven full days from April 12 – 19. They would open with a morning devotion, then go door to door in the community from 10am – 1pm. After lunch, they hosted an open-air afternoon crusade in a large field, since Obunga is a place where everyone still moves from place to place on foot. At 8pm, the gathering would move indoors to the church, where they would teach, pray, and worship until 11pm. The last night, they held a night vigil where they spent the entire night until breakfast time together praying and worshiping and learning God’s word.

Ndoto Community Church was instrumental in providing for some of the students’ needs, including for places to sleep, and helping with some meals as the money the students had brought with them started to run short. The students testified that it was incredible how the youth from Ndoto united with them in ministry, and said that they have never been hosted so beautifully.
Pastor Michael, who is moving to the US with his wife, Ndoto’s founder Allison Schlack, in about a month, said, “Glory to God! What a great manner for me to finally leave my motherland, having served in such a mega mission. Now the work remaining is to follow up with the new believers, help them grow in Christ Jesus, and be discipled.” The rest of the pastoral staff, lay leaders at Ndoto Community Church, and the leaders of other Ndoto ministries, are ready to step into the gap that Pastor Michael is leaving behind, and these new believers are the beginning of a new period of growth for the Kingdom of Christ in Obunga!
