Ndoto: For Africa’s Future is a Christ-centered community development organization that works in the Obunga slum of Kisumu, Kenya. Ndoto is a Swahili word meaning “dream.” We aim to give at-risk youth a chance to dream for themselves, their community, and the kingdom of God through education, discipleship, and development. As an organization, we believe that forgotten communities can be transformed from the inside out. Our dream is to see entire communities changed, not only individual lives transformed. We encourage our students to dream not only about what job they want to have, and who they want to become, but also how they can give back to their community. We invest in people as a whole and empower them to reach their potential, so they will be equipped to become the community leaders of tomorrow. Grade Three Teacher

Job Type: Full Time

Location: Obunga – Kisumu

 

PURPOSE

We are seeking a dedicated and enthusiastic Grade School Teacher to join our vibrant team and play an essential role in the academic and social development of young learners. The successful candidate will be responsible for fostering a positive, inclusive, and stimulating learning environment for students in grade Three. This position requires strong instructional and classroom management skills, a passion for teaching, and the ability to engage with students, parents, and colleagues.

JOB DESCRIPTION

  1. Instructional Planning and Delivery
    • Develop and implement dynamic lesson plans in alignment with the curriculum standards, covering subjects such as Math, English Language Arts, Science, Social Studies, and other essential skills.
    • Adapt teaching methods to accommodate various learning styles, ensuring that all students can reach their full potential.
    • Integrate technology, visual aids, and interactive activities to make learning engaging and accessible for every student.
    • Encourage critical thinking, creativity, and problem-solving through a variety of hands-on and interactive lessons.
  2. Classroom Management
    • Create a safe, respectful, and inclusive classroom environment where students feel valued and motivated.
    • Establish clear behavior expectations and consistently enforce classroom rules and procedures.
    • Address behavioral challenges with positive reinforcement strategies and maintain a well-organized classroom conducive to learning.
  3. Student Assessment and Progress Monitoring
    • Track and document student performance through assignments, quizzes, and other forms of assessment.
    • Provide constructive feedback and develop individualized support plans for students who need additional help.
    • Collaborate with school counselors, special education staff, and administrators to support students with unique learning needs.
  4. Communication and Parent Engagement
    • Maintain open and proactive communication with parents or guardians, providing regular updates on student progress, classroom activities, and school events.
    • Hold parent-teacher conferences and be available for meetings to discuss student progress, behavior, and any concerns.
  5. Professional Development and Team Collaboration
    • Collaborate with colleagues to share teaching strategies and support school initiatives and goals.
    • Participate in professional development opportunities, workshops, and team meetings to continuously improve instructional methods and stay current with educational best practices.
    • Support extracurricular activities, school events, and special programs to contribute to the school community.
  6. Administrative Duties
    • Keep accurate records of student attendance, grades, and other required documentation.
    • Prepare and submit progress reports, end-of-term reports, and assessments as required by the school administration.
    • Contribute to curriculum planning and provide feedback to improve academic programs and resources.
  7. Attend to any other duties as assigned by the supervisor.

PERSON SPECIFICATIONS

  • Should have at least a Bachelor’s Degree in Primary Teaching Education, and registered with the Teachers’ Service Commission (TSC).
  • Should be a born-again Christian.
  • Experience and skills:
    • Should have a minimum of 4 years of teaching experience in a grade school setting.
    • Should be skilled in maintaining a well-ordered classroom and managing student behavior in a positive and supportive manner.
    • Should be flexible and capable of adjusting teaching methods to accommodate diverse learning needs.
    • Should have the ability to work with students of varying abilities and emotional needs with understanding and care.
    • Should have competency with educational technology, such as interactive whiteboards, online learning platforms, and classroom management software.
  • Personal attributes:
    • Should be aligned with Ndoto’s vision, mission, and values.
    • Should have strong written and verbal communication skills in English and Swahili, with Luo as an added benefit.
    • Should have the ability to manage time effectively, keep records meticulously, and stay organized with lesson plans and materials.
    • Should have the ability to work collaboratively as part of a team.
    • Should have empathy and compassion for children from vulnerable communities.
    • Should have cultural sensitivity and the ability to work with diverse populations.
    • Should have strong ethical standards and the ability to maintain confidentiality.

    • Familiar with international curricula and standards alongside proficiency in Kenya’s CBC.
